Lesson 1: Introduction, Time Spent Practicing, Rates of Progress, Off-Days, Consistency, Sleep

Tip #1: Increase How Much You Practice - Let's start by discussing the amount of time you spend practicing each week. In my opinion, the number one determining factor for how fast you learn to play the piano is how much time you spend practicing. We're about to talk about techniques for how to make sure that every minute you spend practicing is as efficient as possible so that you don't waste any time, but there is no substitute for simply spending time at the piano.

If you want to make very fast progress in the piano (where you are able to learn song that challenges you within approximately 1 month), a good goal is 2 hours per day. If you want to make fast progress (where you are able to learn song that challenges you within approximately 2 months), practice one hour a day. If you want to make steady progress (where you are able to learn song that challenges you within approximately 3-4 months), practice a half hour a day. If you practice fifteen minutes a day, you'll make slow progress (where you are able to learn song that challenges you within approximately 5-6 months), and if you don't practice at all you'll make no progress at all.

Tip #2: Schedule Off-Days - I would suggest taking two days off from practicing a week. As long as you put in the practice on the other five days, you'll be making good progress towards your goals. Some people become overly enthusiastic and start by practicing seven days a week for two hours. But you need to ask yourself what is sustainable in the long run? If you're only going to be practicing two hours a day for a few months until you burn out, you've failed. I would rather see you practice 15 minutes a day consistently than 2 hours a day inconsistently.

Tip #3: Spread Out Practice Time Over Multiple Days - its more effective to practice 30 minutes for five days than 2.5 hours one time a week. That’s because you brain processes the information while you are sleeping, not right after your done practicing although it’s counter intuitive. So a little every day is better than a lot once a week.
